Indigenous Awards

Am I Eligible?

Each Award has unique eligibility criteria. Click on the Award that you wish to apply for to determine if you are eligible.

Detailed Eligibility Criteria:

  • Apprenticeship/Trades Training/Certificates/Diplomas
    • You are First Nations (Status or Non-Status), Inuit or Métis;
    • You are a resident of British Columbia, defined as having a primary residence in the province for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the date of full-time enrollment in the program for which the award is applied for;
    • You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant), convention refugee, or protected person living in Canada;
    • You are planning to study at a BC public post-secondary institution, or Indigenous post-secondary institution;
    • Your course of study will be no less than seven (7) continuous weeks in length and will commence sometime between the dates of May 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022;
    • You will be registered as a full-time student*, as defined by the institution you will be attending (usually 60% or more of a full course load).

    *Exceptions may apply to applicants who are prevented from studying full-time for medical reasons or disabilities.

     

    How to Apply

    • Previous Year Award Recipients:
      If you previously received an Award in this category and you remain enrolled in your program on a full-time basis, you may request a renewal of your award. (Maximum of one additional year.)
    • If you previously received an Award in this category and have completed your program, you can apply for a new Award for a different program.

    How to Renew

  • Undergraduate or Associate Degree/Law or Medical Degree
    • You are First Nations (Status or Non-Status), Inuit or Métis;
    • You are a resident of British Columbia, defined as having a primary residence in the province for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the date of full-time enrollment in the program for which the award is applied for;
    • You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant), convention refugee, or protected person living in Canada;
    • You are planning to study at a BC public post-secondary institution, or Indigenous post-secondary institution;
    • Your course of study will be no less than two semesters in length and will commence sometime between the dates of May 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022;
    • You will be registered as a full-time student*, as defined by the institution you will be attending (usually 60% or more of a full course load).

    *Exceptions may apply to applicants who are prevented from studying full-time for medical reasons or disabilities.

     

    How to Apply

    Previous Year Award Recipients:

    • If you previously received an Award in this category, and you remain enrolled in your program on a full-time basis, you may request a renewal of your award. (Maximum of three additional years.)
    • If you previously received an Award in this category and have completed your program, you can apply for a new Award for a different program.

    How to Renew

  • Master's or Doctoral Degree
    • You are First Nations (Status or Non-Status), Inuit or Métis;
    • You are a resident of British Columbia, defined as having a primary residence in the province for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the date of full-time enrollment in the program for which the award is applied for;
    • You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant), convention refugee, or protected person living in Canada;
    • You are planning to study at a BC public post-secondary institution, or Indigenous post-secondary institution;
    • Your course of study will be no less than two semesters in length and will commence sometime between the dates of May 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022;
    • You will be registered as a full-time student*, as defined by the institution you will be attending (usually 60% or more of a full course load).

    How to Apply

    Previous Year Award Recipients:

    • If you previously received an Award in this category, and you remain enrolled in the same full-time program, you may request a renewal of your original award.(Maximum of three additional years for Master’s, or six additional years for Doctoral.) You must provide a confirmation of “positive progress” from your program supervisor to qualify;
    • Past recipients completing their programs following one additional term of study that commences after May 1, 2021, are eligible to apply for partial renewals valued at half the total award amount;
    • If you previously received an Award(s) in this category and have completed your program, you can apply for a new Award for a different program.

    How to Renew

  • Teacher Education
    • You are First Nations (Status or Non-Status), Inuit or Métis;
    • You are a resident of British Columbia, defined as having a primary residence in the province for at least 12 consecutive months prior to the date of full-time enrollment in the program for which the award is applied for;
    • You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (landed immigrant), convention refugee, or protected person living in Canada;
    • You are registered in a teacher education program at a BC university, leading directly to certification by the British Columbia Teachers’ Council (includes programs leading to a Developmental Standard Term Certificate in First Nations Language and Culture, but does not include “ladder” programs);
    • Your course of study will be no less than two semesters in length and will commence sometime between the dates of May 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022;
    • Recipients completing their programs following one additional term of study that commences after May 1, 2021, are eligible to apply for partial awards valued at half the total award;
    • You will be registered as a full-time student*, as defined by the institution you will be attending (usually 60% or more of a full course load).

    *Exceptions may apply to applicants who are prevented from studying full-time for medical reasons or disabilities.

     

    How to Apply
